Which Countries Use Social Media the Most?

Social media continues to play a significant role in our daily life. According to recent reports by Statista, there are approximately 4.6 billion social media users globally. The research institution expects that number to rise to 5.85 billion in 2027.

The use of social media now goes beyond keeping in touch with our loved ones or entertainment. It is a hub for businesses to connect with customers and promote their brands.

But which regions are using social media the most? Here is a list of the most active countries on social media.

5. Africa

Nigeria has 32.90 million social media users, making it Africa’s most socially active country and the only African nation in the top 20. Their average daily time on social networks is 3 hours and 42 minutes. South Africa is in second place with 32.73 million users.

Each day, they spend an average of 3 hours and 37 minutes surfing social media. These numbers are incredibly high in comparison with some countries on the continent.

For instance, only 1.20 million people in Botswana use social media, which is around half of the population.

4. Europe

In Europe, Russians are the highest users of social networks. According to Statista, there are 101 million active social media users in Russia. Turkey comes second in the continent with 68.90 million users.

In third and fourth place are Germany and France with 72.60 million and 52.60 million respectively. The fifth highest nation with the most active social media users in Europe is Italy, which has 43.18 million active users.

3. South America

Brazil is the South American country with the highest social media users, with 164.46 million people. An estimated 54% of users prefer Facebook, with Pinterest, Instagram, Youtube, and Twitter following behind.

2. North America

The United States comes third in the top 20 list with 223 million social media users. Adults in the United States spend 33 minutes per day on Facebook. Social media usage among 16-24-year-olds is 3 hours a day on average. Mexico comes second with 98.21 million social media users, and Canada is third with 34.47 million active users on social media.

1. Asia

Asia dominates the top 20 countries with the world’s highest number of social media users. Eight of the top twenty countries for social media usage are in Asia.

The first position is China, followed by India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, and Bangladesh. China has a whopping 1,69 million users. India has 467 million users, which is less than half the user base of China.

Despite China’s blockade of western social networks, domestic social networks are enormously popular.

Most internet users are active on more than one domestic social network, and 30 percent log on at least once daily. The other Asian countries are far behind China and India in terms of usage.

China has nearly three times more than India in the top twenty list. In third place is the United States, with Mexico behind them in North America.

The European countries also have significant social networking activity, with Russia and Turkey leading the way.
