When it comes to storage solutions, many of us look upwards and consider using the attic. After all, it’s an out-of-the-way place that can remain largely untouched for a significant amount of time. However, there are several reasons why you should avoid storing things in your attic.
1. Extreme Temperatures
First, attics are often subject to extreme temperatures. During summer months, the attic space can become extremely hot and humid. This makes it difficult to store items that require a cool, dry environment such as books, artwork or electronics. In winter months, freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst and any stored items to become damaged due to ice or condensation from the cold.
2. Rodents and Insects
Second, attics are prime real estate for rodents and insects. Mice, rats, and other vermin can easily gain access to the attic space if there are openings or cracks the walls or ceiling. Once inside, they can damage stored by gnawing on boxes or nesting inside stored items. Carpenter ants and termites can also enter the attic and cause extensive damage to beams or other structural elements of your home.
3. Attic Insulation
Third, any items stored in the attic will likely obstruct airflow which can drastically reduce the effectiveness of attic insulation. Without adequate ventilation and insulation, your utility bill will skyrocket as your home’s temperature can become difficult to control.
4. Fire Hazard
Fourth, stored items in the attic can create a fire hazard as heat from the attic space can easily ignite combustible. This is especially true when storing flammable items such cans of paint or gasoline for lawn mowers.
5. Air Quality
Fifth, stored items can reduce the quality of air in your home. Mold and mildew can grow quickly on damp boxes and create a musty odor that seeps into other parts of the home. This is especially concerning if you’re storing food or items made with fabrics as they are more likely to attract pests.
6. Structural Damage
Finally, stored items can cause structural damage as the weight of boxes and furniture can be too much for the attic floor. This is especially true if you have an older home with joists that may not be able to support the weight of stored items.
For these reasons, it’s best to avoid using your attic for storage. If you absolutely must store items in the attic, make sure that you adequately prepare the space to ensure it is temperature controlled and sealed off from pests. Additionally, make sure all stored items are properly contained in plastic tubs or sealed containers. This will help protect them from moisture and potential infestations. With proper care, your attic can remain free from damage and be a safe place to store items.
